SEPTEMBER

It's Not WHAT We Say, It's HOW We Say It! with Mark Ortman

September 20, 2022 from 12:00 - 1:30pm

Register in advance for this meeting by clicking here.

Mark Ortman, a skilled past mediator for the WDRC, wrote a fabulous book - The Secret to Everyday Communication (Without Argument) - and is going to share more of his learnings with us. "Everyday communication works, until it doesn't. Whether at home or at work, when opinions, or what two people want differs, talk can quickly turn into an argument. Growing frustration can lead to words weaponized to hurt—all to prove one's point. There is a better way. This seminar takes a realistic look at human nature, and the words that move everyday disagreement into a civil discussion (without argument)."

Beyond Disagreement: Appreciative inquiry in mediation

Mediations can often feel tense. Perhaps an agreement can be reach, however there is no room for positivity. While this may be the case in some mediations, there is also the potential of growth, positive framing for the future, and appreciation of the past. Appreciative inquiry is a way of communicating and asking questions that can elicit the positive side of conflict and relationships in the mediation room.
